MGRC Mission Statement

Maple Grove Radio Club provides education to current and future amateur radio operators, with the goal of serving the public. We are a reliable communications resource for events and emergencies in Maple Grove and surrounding communities.

President’s Message April 2023

Thank you to everyone who participated in our Midwinter Madness Hamfest. It was a great success! I would like to thank the MWM committee in particular, they put a lot of effort into it, and it shows.

MN Section Manager Bill Mitchell, AE0EE, will be our guest speaker at this month’s meeting. He will talk about VOTA- Volunteers On The Air, and operating as W1AW/0. I expect he will also give us an ARRL update.

I look forward to participating in all our summer volunteer opportunities this year. The Multiple Sclerosis Society bike rides are always looking for volunteers, with the first one being the Twin Cities bike ride coming up on May 13th. They need SAG drivers and navigators, and rest stop communicators. You should all know by now that this is a chance show the community our dedication as a communications resource, as well as keeping our skills fresh. I’ve already started making plans to help with the MS-150 on June 10th & 11th.

It’s also storm season, despite that new layer of white stuff on the ground. A great way to use your Ham license is to report storms, and to do this properly you need spotter training. Metro Skywarn still has spotter classes left this spring, both in-person and on zoom. We also need net control operators, and will provide training.

Amateur Radio Included in FEMA Guide for National Emergency Preparedness

The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) has released a final version (March 2023) of the National Incident Management System (NIMS) Information and Communications Technology (ICT) Functional Guidance. The guidance, which provides a framework for communications resources within incident management, officially includes support from amateur radio operators. The expanded Communications Unit (COMU) structure now includes the Auxiliary Communicator (AUXC) role, which covers personnel from services that provide communications support to emergency management, public safety, and other government agencies. This includes amateur radio.

NIMS guides government, non-governmental organizations, and the private sector to work together to prepare for, respond to, and recover from disasters and other emergencies. "This is a major step in the recognition of the need and usefulness of amateur radio and other communications services in our national preparedness," said Josh Johnston, KE5MHV, Director of Emergency Management for ARRL The National Association for Amateur Radio®. "It also gives official guidance to pave the way for future training and education of volunteers in ARRL's Amateur Radio Emergency Service® (ARES®)," Johnston added.

The NIMS ICT guide (PDF) is available at https://www.fema.gov/sites/default/files/documents/fema_ict-functional-guidance.pdf. http://www.arrl.org/arrlletter?issue=2023-03-23#toc02

Morse Operators Wanted!

The Forest City Museum is building an Open Wire Telegraph and Telephone aerial plant.

The goal of this open air exhibit is to have working Morse circuits and working local battery magneto signaling telephone circuits. The Telegraph circuits will link Red Depot Restoration with other buildings on site. Initially, these two open wire ground return railroad sysle Morse circuits.
We need MORSE OPERATORS! Nothing fancy or difficult, this is a two-day show in August at the Forest City Threshers location near Litchfield MN. The format is Railroad and Western Union American Morse telegraphy. Working instruments are installed at the Red Depot agent office and at Lumber Yard building and are linked by overhead leads. All skills are needed; proof readers, operators, linemen, builders, instrument repairmen.
If you would like to join us contact me soon (Bob Bohrer) so that training can be arranged. I have instructo-graph machines and tapes, as well as computer-based training with Morse sounders.
If you are already good in American Morse you could help us all learn! Please join the fun!
